judy: a study in tremors

As a kid, my siblings and I loved finding trinkets of history in our parent’s bureaus. My dad’s had three small drawers across the top and they contained his belt buckle collection, random jewelry from deceased family members, and other notes of the past. When he passed away in March 2021, my siblings and I went straight to these drawers as a way to feel closer to him in our deep sadness. The treasure from that day was a post-it note with my mom’s name written with his Parkinson’s tremor hand. He started three times and on the third try he was able to write her full name. I immediately saw this as a love letter to my mom as his memory was fading. He wanted to remember her when he was having an off day. Spending this year working through my grief, I dove in and made this series. Working title: sundowning: the fuckery of it all.
